5 Best Tourist Places to visit in Haa

The Haa Valley is Bhutan's smallest, least-populated, and least-visited valley. Everything about it, from its culture-conscious inhabitants to the profusion of flora and animals in its lush surroundings, makes it one of the country's most wonderful destinations. It is one of the best places to visit in Bhutan.

Traveling to Haa Valley from Paro through Chele La Pass or Thimphu via Chuzom reveals many unique tourist attractions that will make your journey to Haa Valley unforgettable. Here are some places to visit in Haa:

  1. Lhakhang Nagpo

Lhakhang Nagpo is called Black Temple, and is a 10-minute walk from Lhakhang Karpo. King Songtsen Gampo is supposed to have released a white and black pigeon intending to erect temples wherever the pigeons landed. Where the black pigeon landed, the Lhakhang Nagpo was erected with the places of Haa Bhutan.

The walls are painted black with horizontal red and white stripes representing the valley's ancient tantric practices. The temple is claimed to be built on top of an underground lake, with a hole in the temple's floor connecting to it.

2. Lhakhang Karpo

Manjushri (God of Knowledge), Vajrapani (God of Power), and Avalokiteshwara (God of Compassion), the protector-deities of the Haa valley, are represented by the Meri Phuensum Mountains or Brother Mountains of Haa valley. The Lhakhang Karpo, or White Temple, is located in the little settlement of Damchoe, at the foothills of these mountains. It was first established by King Songtsen Gampo in the 7th century.

The White Temple represents the virtues of compassion and Dharma, with its stunning murals and paintings adorning its walls.

3. Jigme Khesar Strict Nature Reserve

The Jigme Khesar Strict Nature Reserve is located in the northwest of the nation at elevations ranging from 1400 to 4800 meters, and it shares a large chunk of its land with Haa and then some with Samtse dzongkhags.

There are a variety of creatures such as Common and Clouded Leopards, Musk Deer, Red Panda, Tibetan Snowcock, Rufous Necked Hornbills, and tigers in the Reserve, which has a diversified ecology with tropical and alpine forests. There are a lot of things to do in Haa.

4. Haa Wangchuck Lo Dzong

The Dzong is located on Haa's lush valley floor, flanked to the east by the Paro valley and the west by the Holy Mountains of Meri Puensum. After the ancient Dzong was burned down in 1915, the new Dzong was established as an administrative center for the Bhutan Royal Family. The Dzong now serves as the headquarters and training ground for the Indian Military Forces.

The Dzong also serves as a military academy. Even though it is not a monastery, the Dzong is rich in architectural magnificence, and while visits are not permitted, you may view the Dzong from afar.

5. Dobzi Dzong

One of Bhutan's oldest Dzongs is claimed to be the Dobzi Dzong. The Dzong, erected in 1531 by Ngawang Choegyal, is perched atop a rocky outcropping. The Dzong was originally intended to serve as a center for Drukpa Kagyudpa instruction, but it was quickly changed into a monastic body and then jail. The Dzong now serves as a monastery school.

Dormitories surround the stronghold, which has a front with a temple. The Dzong not only has a long history of spirituality and incarceration, but it also has a breathtaking view of the surrounding green-carpeted undulating valleys and a steep ravine on one side that leads to the Pahu Wangchuu river. On the road to Haa Valley, the Dobzi Dzong lies 11 kilometers from Chuzom.
